Dear members,

I've got a question to you.
My name is Helen and I'm a becoming student at HWU, studying chemistry, undergraduate. My situation is second...
I've applied too late for an accommodation on campus, so... the university cannot provide me a guaranteed room.
I am looking for a cheap room for rent (<320£pcm), due to my limited finances. Would be perfectly to font out something in Balerno, Sighthill, Currie... well, near HWU.
The only wish is to have female neighbours.
So any advice/information is welcomed.
I am easy-going and tidy, communicative and have a lot of interests.
Waiting for your replies!

Help required for MSc Dissertation
Hello all,

I’m a student at Napier University writing an MSc dissertation on teaching methods for dyslexics in the world of IT. I’m really interested in how people have found higher education compared to secondary school, and in particular dyslexics who are learning to program, especially in object-oriented languages. How well has it been taught to you? Is there enough support for you eg: extra time in exams, more accessible textbooks etc? Do you have any suggestions on how teaching might be improved in this area? Maybe a change in focus is needed?

I’d be really grateful if you would fill in my poll here; LJ comments are also welcome, and anonymous commenting is on. All results will remain anonymous whether you participate under an LJ name or not. I’d also appreciate any detailed experiences if you have time: please email them to me at ljs56 at cam dot ac dot uk.

Thank you so much!

Anyone interested in a sceptics' society?
I may be sticking around to do a PhD here so I figured this might be a fun thing to start up. We could have debates about the whole Intelligent Design creationism fiasco, visits to the Edinburgh Dungeons or other supposedly haunted places from a sceptical point of view (sort of like the world's most boring Ghostbusters), or just do what I did when I was on my placement: have lunch with like-minded people so we can complain about how gullible our homeopathy-funding politicians are.

So, anyone interested? I was thinking we could get some sort of preliminary group together around about June (after my finals) and arrange to have a stall at the Fair when we come back in the autumn.

The Methodist Conference this year starts on Wednesday at the Heriot Watt campus.

On Monday the 26th of June, after coffee, Joint Advisory Committee for the Ethics of Investment is putting forward that they end their boycott of Nestlé because the company has admitted to 1 of the 147 allegations put forward by Baby Milk Action and other NGOs, in the company’s opinion the majority of the allegations were either not Code infringements, or were based upon mistaken reporting.

Nestlé have a practise of telling investors and protestors exactly what they want to hear then carrying on regardless. In recent years Nestlé's Chief Executive Peter Brabeck-Letmathe has met and persuaded several groups that the boycott is based on old and misleading information, and because it's face to face people happily believe him.

Conference document on the debate:

Baby Milk Action refuting Nestlé's PR

I'm looking for volunteers for Saturday and Monday to help handout Baby Milk Action leaflets. This will not be a confrontational protest. You can contact me directly at:

So, there's been the smoking ban in public/work enclosed spaces for a while now. Heriot Watt introduced its own version, much the same but with the proviso that when you go outdoors for a crafty fag, you must be more than 5 metres away from campus buildings. This includes canopy overhangs, a recent meeting clarified. Does anyone else feel like drawing chalk circles round the side exits from the hugh nisbet(?) building where everyone congregates at lunchtime? i'm typically comeing back from my lunch, and it's disgusting to walk out into the air an inhale all that smoke. Frankly, if the smokers moved further away, they could sit on the grass or benches not uncomfortable bar things.

probably noone else feels like it, and thinks i should stop whinging since teh smokers have got a pretty rough deal out of this. what do you reckon?

Hi there! New member, new student in Heriot Watt...

Actually I'm French, and I'll study in Edinburgh as part of my degree during the first semester of the next academic year. And I have a few questions to ask... First of all, WHEN exactly does the first semester begin? (And incidentally, when does it end?) And second, does anybody here study Languages and Translation (preferably French/German)? If so, can you give me a few details about the courses and stuff?

Thank you very much in advance! I think this community will be really helpful when I'm in Edinburgh!

AUT strike
From Frances William's email to all students:
`Students are advised to attend classes and lectures as normal. Your
school will advise you directly of any postponement of classes or
lectures as a result of the strike action.'

I'm surprised at this. Most lecturers in my department are striking. But have any undergrads actually got notice from their lecturers not to turn up (i.e.the direct advice which Williams mentions.) I'm guessing the shop, canteen etc will be open as usual? I prob won't come in anyway, it's boring here without people in the department.
